The rejected deliverer meets wilderness resistance

The Moses they refused becomes ruler and deliverer, and the wilderness still turns toward idols

This Moses whom they refused, saying who made you a ruler and a judge, is the one God sent to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel who appeared in the bush. He brings them out after showing wonders and signs in Egypt, in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years. This is the Moses who said to the children of Israel that God would raise up a prophet like him from their brethren. This is the one who was in the church in the wilderness with the angel who spoke on mount Sina and with their fathers, who received the lively oracles to give to them.

Their fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt, saying to Aaron, make us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who brought us out of Egypt, they do not know what has become of him. They make a calf, offer sacrifice to the idol, and rejoice in the works of their own hands. God turns and gives them up to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: the house of Israel took up the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of their god Remphan, figures they made to worship; God will carry them away beyond Babylon. The Amos citation follows a Greek textual form. The sharp ancestral critique belongs to Jewish prophetic self-criticism. Christians cannot seize it as an outsider indictment of Jews. Stephen is not authorizing antisemitism.

Living words and a calf can occupy the same wilderness

The people receive oracles and still manufacture gods. The speech hurts because it is family memory, not because Israel is being defined as uniquely idolatrous by a later church. Moses the rejected prophet remains the pattern Stephen is about to press on the council, still from inside the story.
