Amos 5:4-6
Seek the LORD and Live, Not the Sanctuaries
Seek ye me, and ye shall live
Inside the lament the LORD speaks directly: Seek ye me, and ye shall live. Life is offered through seeking the LORD, not through pilgrimage treated as a shield. Seeking here is covenantal turning, later spelled out as seeking good and establishing justice (5:14-15).
The offer is real and urgent. It is not a guarantee of health, wealth, survival, or immunity from consequences. Joseph does not map onto a modern church, ethnicity, or nation.
Do not seek Bethel, nor enter Gilgal, nor pass to Beersheba
Three sacred destinations are ruled out as guarantees. Gilgal shall surely go into captivity; Bethel shall come to nought. Hebrew wordplay joins Gilgal to exile and Bethel to worthlessness or trouble. Beersheba, in Judah, still attracted northern pilgrimage; "pass not" concerns that trust, not a ban on travel today.
Fire may devour the house of Joseph with none to quench it at Bethel. The warning criticizes misplaced sanctuary confidence, not Judaism, church attendance, or sacred places in every context. Religious travel cannot replace justice.
How this should shape us
Evaluate religious renewal by whether harmful practice changes, not by attendance, travel, emotion, or branding. Seek the living God in truthful conduct. Do not treat a sacred address as a shelter from repair.
