Ecclesiastes 1:1-2
The Preacher and the Hebel Motto
A framed voice, then a motto to be tested
The book opens with a heading: the words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. That royal description locates Qoheleth in a Solomon-like pose. It does not prove that every later sentence is a palace diary.
Then the motto: Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. The Hebrew hebel can be vapor, breath, absurdity, or enigma. The book will test this claim, not print it as a slogan and stop.

Do not flatten the whole book into one English word. Hear who is speaking, and let later chapters show what the motto can and cannot mean.
