Ecclesiastes 1:3-11
No Lasting Profit in the Restless World
What profit under the sun?
The governing question is profit from all labor under the sun. Generations pass; the earth abides. Sun, wind, and rivers run circuits and are not filled. Speech, seeing, and hearing are not satisfied.
There is no new thing under the sun, the speaker says, and later generations will not remember. The restlessness is cosmic and human. It is not a license to despise ordinary work, and it is not a claim that nothing ever changes in a particular life.
How this should shape us
Ask what a project is for before you call it progress. Restlessness is not automatically wisdom, and forgetfulness is not automatically humility.
