Ecclesiastes 7:1-6
Mourning, Sorrow, and Wise Rebuke
A good name, the house of mourning, and the rebuke of the wise
A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of one's birth. It is better to go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting. Sorrow is better than laughter; the heart of the wise is in the house of mourning.
It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than the song of fools. The crackling of thorns under a pot: so is the laughter of the fool. The unit trains attention toward mortality and truthful correction. It does not command you to despise every feast or to tell a new parent that death is better.
How this should shape us
Choose rooms where truth about death and correction can be heard. Do not use this saying to shame joy, and do not avoid a funeral because it is sad.
