Ecclesiastes 7:7-14
Patience, Adversity, and the Crooked Limit
Oppression, haste, patience, and the crooked that cannot be made straight
Surely oppression makes a wise man mad, and a gift destroys the heart. Better is the end of a thing than the beginning; the patient in spirit than the proud. Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry.
Say not, What is the cause that the former days were better? In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also has set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him. Consider the work of God: who can make that straight which he has made crooked? Patience is not passivity toward oppression, and crookedness is not an excuse for adding more.
How this should shape us
Do not bribe or be bribed. Do not romanticize former days. In a hard day, consider; in a good day, receive. Neither is a theory that God authors every injustice you see.
