Ephesians 5:22–33
Marriage Under Christ's Self-Giving Love
Marriage is placed under Christ's self-giving love, never under harm.
Wives are addressed in a world that already assumed male household rule. Paul locates marriage inside Christ's love for the church. "Wives submit" does not sit alone. It sits under submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Husbands are commanded, repeatedly, to love as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. That is costly care, not a warrant to dominate.
This text is not a charter for coercive marriage, control, isolation, forced sex, or staying in harm's way. A spouse who uses it to trap, threaten, or silence the other is opposing Christ, not obeying him.
Christ nourishes the church. He does not crush her.
The mystery is Christ and the church. No reading may baptize abuse, financial captivity, or spiritual intimidation as "headship." Leave harm. Seek safety and wise help.
The church's job is to protect the vulnerable, not to quote this chapter as a lock on the door.
How this should shape us
A modern marriage that uses this chapter to trap, isolate, or control is opposing Christ. Husbands, love with self-giving care; if you are in danger, leave harm, get safe help, and expect the church to protect you rather than quote this text as a lock.

Where careful interpreters disagreeThe strongest options and their difficulties
Where do careful interpreters disagree?
Best judgment: Faithful interpreters disagree about whether verse 21 teaches fully reciprocal submission in marriage and about the precise force of 'head.' The strongest common boundary is clear: the passage cannot support abusive domination, and husbands are repeatedly bound to Christlike self-giving love.
