Simple Altars Follow a Voice from Heaven
You have seen that I talked with you from heaven
Because Israel heard God without an image, they are not to make gods of silver or gold with him. The next worship instruction follows from a voice, not from a statue they can manage.
Earth, uncut stone, and no steps
An altar of earth may receive burnt offerings and peace offerings, sheep and oxen. In every place where God records his name he will come and bless. If the altar is stone, it must not be hewn; a tool on it pollutes it. They are not to go up by steps, that nakedness be not uncovered on it.
Worship is limited in manufacture and in display. Cut stone, precious-metal gods, and staged ascent are refused. The modest altar is not a full temple blueprint and not a license to shame bodies; it restrains spectacle at the place of offering.
How this should shape us
Make worship practices transparent about materials, access, and display. Remove the gold, the tool, or the staircase if it is there to impress, to control, or to expose people rather than to answer a God who already spoke from heaven.
