Exodus 33:12–23
Moses Pleads for Presence and Glory
You have not told me whom you will send, and this nation is your people
Moses says God has told him to bring up this people without letting him know whom he will send. Yet God has said he knows Moses by name and that Moses has found grace. Therefore: show me your way, that I may know you; consider that this nation is your people. God answers, 'My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.' Moses: if your presence go not, do not carry us up. How else will it be known that I and your people have found grace, if you do not go with us? So shall we be separated from all other peoples. God will do this thing also, because Moses has found grace and is known by name.
Show me your glory: goodness passing, face unseen
Moses asks to see glory. God will make all his goodness pass before him and proclaim the name of the LORD: gracious to whom he will be gracious, merciful to whom he will be merciful. No one can see his face and live. Moses will stand on a rock; while glory passes he will be put in a cleft, covered by God's hand, then see back parts; the face shall not be seen.
The plea ties personal favor to the whole people's accompaniment. Rest is presence, not a private mystic prize. The coming disclosure is goodness, name, and mercy—partial, protected, and refused as full sight. Speculative descriptions of God are exactly what this unit will not give.
How this should shape us
Refuse to go forward on promises of success without presence. Ask to know God's way for the people, not a vision you can own, and accept that even granted glory may be goodness passing by while your face is covered.
