Exodus 33:7–11
Moses Meets God at a Tent outside the Camp
A tent of meeting pitched outside, afar off
Moses takes the tent, pitches it without the camp, far off, and calls it the tent of the congregation. Everyone who seeks the LORD goes out to that tent, outside the camp. Presence after the calf is not assumed in the middle of the people.
Cloud at the door, worship from tent doors, speech like a friend
When Moses goes out, all the people stand at their tent doors and look after him until he enters. The cloudy pillar descends and stands at the door; the LORD talks with Moses. The people see the cloud and worship, each at his own door. The LORD speaks to Moses face to face, as a man to his friend. Moses returns to the camp; Joshua son of Nun, a young man, does not depart from the tent.
Face-to-face here is a comparison for frank speech, not a cancellation of the later word that no one can see God's face and live. Distance from the camp, a watching people, and a servant who stays behind all belong to this provisional meeting-place.
How this should shape us
After rupture, do not pretend the old center is still safe. Make a place where people can seek God without denying the breach, and do not confuse a leader's frank access with permission to describe God's face.

Where careful interpreters disagreeThe strongest options and their difficulties
Where do careful interpreters disagree?
Best judgment: Careful interpreters agree that the received text states the following: A tent outside camp becomes the place of inquiry, cloud descends, the people worship from their tents, and Moses speaks with God face to face while Joshua remains. They disagree over source layers, date, historical recovery, archaeology, Hebrew details, ritual development, legal use, and canonical relationship in different proportions; this study treats the final form directly while marking those alternatives as probable or uncertain rather than settled fact.
