Ezekiel 18:30–32
Turn, Make a New Heart, and Live
Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways
Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye. The close of the chapter is invitation, not a trap.
Make you a new heart is command and gift-language together
The house is told to turn, cast away, and make a new heart, while later oracles will also say God gives one. The imperative does not flatten into self-rescue.
The imperative does not teach self-salvation, blame people for conditions they cannot change, or make death evidence of refused repentance. God takes no pleasure in death. That sentence forbids using a grave as proof.
How this should shape us
Turn, and ask for a new heart, because God does not enjoy your dying. Do not tell the sick or the bereaved that death settled this verse against them.
