Ezekiel 28:20–23
Sidon Receives a Brief Pestilence and Sword Oracle
Sidon is judged without a long ship-poem
The word comes against Zidon. The LORD is against her; he will be glorified in the midst of her, and they shall know that he is the LORD when he executes judgments and is sanctified in her.
Pestilence is sent into her streets; the wounded are judged in the midst of her by the sword upon her on every side. The brief oracle is holiness shown in a neighboring port, not a medical diagnosis of every illness.
A sister city, not a modern target
Sidon has stood beside Tyre in the ship-lament as mariners. Now she receives her own sword-and-pestilence word. The pair are Phoenician ports in Judah's world, not a charter for hating present Sidon or Lebanon.
Illness in this unit is covenant-judgment rhetoric for that city, not proof that a later outbreak is divine targeting of a people.
How this should shape us
Do not need a long dossier before refusing to gloat over a neighbor port. Do not aim this pestilence at modern Lebanese, and do not read a fever as God's GPS.
