Ezekiel 29:13–16
Egypt Returns as a Low Kingdom
Gathered again, but as a low kingdom
At the end of forty years the LORD gathers the Egyptians from the people among whom they were scattered. He brings again the captivity of Egypt and causes them to return into the land of Pathros, into the land of their habitation. They shall be there a base kingdom.
It shall be the basest of the kingdoms; neither shall it exalt itself any more above the nations. The LORD diminishes them, that they shall no more rule over the nations.
So Israel will not look to Egypt again
It shall no more be the confidence of the house of Israel, which bringeth their iniquity to remembrance, when they shall look after them. They shall know that the LORD is the LORD.
The low kingdom is a limit on Israel's political trust, not a doctrine of permanent ethnic inferiority, and not a policy for keeping a nation weak. Pathros names Egypt's own southern home, not a caste.
How this should shape us
Learn not to rest national hope on a power that has already torn the shoulder. Do not call a people 'base' as a racial verdict, and do not use this oracle to justify keeping anyone poor.
