Ezekiel 29:8–12
Egypt Faces Sword, Desolation, and Scattering
Because of the ownership claim, sword and waste follow
Therefore the LORD brings a sword and cuts off man and beast. The land of Egypt shall be desolate and waste, and they shall know that he is the LORD, because Pharaoh said, The river is mine, and I have made it.
The LORD is against the rivers and the land; he makes Egypt utterly waste from the tower of Syene even unto the border of Ethiopia. No foot of man or beast shall pass through for forty years.
Forty years among the nations, not a clock on Egypt now
The cities of Egypt shall be desolate forty years, and the LORD will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them through the countries. The number belongs to this oracle's exile-shaped sentence, matching Israel's own remembered wilderness span in rhetorical force.
It does not authorize a modern countdown, and it does not dump collective blame on Egyptians as a people. Humans and animals suffer in the picture because the land's life is being withdrawn, not because ethnicity is guilt.
How this should shape us
Hear how a ruler's claim to have made the river becomes a land emptied of traffic. Do not run a forty-year timer on Egypt, and do not treat this scattering as a standing verdict on Egyptians.
