Shepherds Feed Themselves and Scatter the Flock
Shepherds who eat the flock
Woe to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves. Should not the shepherds feed the flocks? They eat the fat, clothe themselves with the wool, and kill them that are fed, but they feed not the flock.
The diseased have they not strengthened, neither have they healed that which was sick, neither have they bound up that which was broken, neither have they brought again that which was driven away, neither have they sought that which was lost. With force and with cruelty have they ruled them.
Scattered sheep, and God against the shepherds
They were scattered because there is no shepherd, and they became meat to all the beasts of the field when they were scattered. My sheep wandered through all the mountains and upon every high hill; my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them.
The LORD is against the shepherds. He will require his flock at their hand, cause them to cease from feeding the flock, and the shepherds shall not feed themselves any more. He will deliver his flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them. The metaphor does not make people property, and a shepherd title does not let abusive leaders keep the wool.
How this should shape us
Measure anyone who claims a flock by the weak, the sick, the broken, the driven away, and the lost. If the leader is clothed and the people are meat, the woe has already spoken. Remove harm; do not protect a title.
