Hearers Enjoy Ezekiel's Performance but Do Not Act
Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word
The children of Ezekiel's people still talk against him by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD.
They come as the people cometh, and sit before him as the LORD's people, and they hear his words, but they will not do them. With their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.
A lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice
Ezekiel is unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument: they hear his words, but they do them not. When this cometh to pass—lo, it will come—then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.
Appreciation is not obedience. The critique does not authorize manipulating an audience or despising people who come to listen. Performance-religion is named so that fulfillment, not applause, will certify the speaker.

Ask whether you collect teaching the way you collect music. Love in the mouth with gain in the heart is this scene. Listen in order to do, without treating hearers as fools and without calling enjoyment the same thing as turning.
