Three Stories of Side Chambers Surround the House
Side chambers in three stories, thirty on a level
He measures the wall of the house, six cubits, and the breadth of every side chamber, four cubits, round about the house on every side. The side chambers are three, one over another, and thirty in order. They enter into the wall which is of the house for the side chambers round about, that they might have hold, but they have not hold in the wall of the house.
There is an enlarging, and a winding about still upward to the side chambers, for the winding about of the house went still upward round about the house. Therefore the breadth of the house is still upward, and so increased from the lowest chamber to the highest by the midst.
A foundation, a separate place, two doors
He sees the height of the house round about; the foundations of the side chambers are a full reed of six great cubits. The thickness of the wall for the side chamber without is five cubits, and that which is left is the place of the side chambers that are within.
Between the chambers is the wideness of twenty cubits round about the house. The doors of the side chambers are toward the place that is left, one door toward the north and another toward the south; the breadth of the place that is left is five cubits round about. Three stories of rooms wrapping the house are support space, not a demand that every textual difficulty be solved or that a replica be built.
How this should shape us
Notice rooms that hold without being driven into the holy wall. Service space can wrap a house without claiming to be the nave. Do not freeze every cubit into a replica, and do not pretend the wrapping rooms are less part of the vision.
