Ezekiel 42:15–20
A Square Outer Boundary Separates Holy and Common
He measures the east, north, south, and west
When he has made an end of measuring the inner house, he brings Ezekiel forth toward the gate whose prospect is toward the east, and measures it round about. He measures the east side with the measuring reed, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed round about. The north side, five hundred reeds. The south side, five hundred reeds. He turns about to the west side and measures five hundred reeds.
He measures it by the four sides. It has a wall round about, five hundred reeds long, and five hundred broad, to make a separation between the sanctuary and the profane place.
A square wall between holy and common
The whole complex is now a square. Inner grades of holiness sit inside an outer boundary whose purpose is named: to separate sanctuary from the common place.
That boundary does not authorize segregation by ethnicity, wealth, disability, or perceived moral purity. Holy and common is a liturgical distinction in this vision, not a ranking of neighbors, and not a fence against the strangers chapter 47 will settle in the land.
How this should shape us
Let holy and common be about how a people approaches God, not about who is allowed to be a person. Do not build a social wall from these five hundred reeds, and do not forget that this same vision will give resident foreigners an inheritance.
