Ezekiel 44:9–14
Foreign Access Is Restricted and Errant Levites Receive Lower Service
No stranger uncircumcised shall enter
Thus saith the Lord GOD: No stranger, uncircumcised in heart, nor uncircumcised in flesh, shall enter into my sanctuary, of any stranger that is among the children of Israel.
The Levites that are gone away far from the LORD, when Israel went astray, which went astray away from him after their idols, they shall even bear their iniquity. Yet they shall be ministers in the sanctuary, having charge at the gates of the house, and ministering to the house: they shall slay the burnt offering and the sacrifice for the people, and they shall stand before them to minister unto them.
They shall not come near to do the office of a priest
Because they ministered unto them before their idols, and caused the house of Israel to fall into iniquity, therefore the LORD has lifted up his hand against them: they shall bear their iniquity. They shall not come near unto him, to do the office of a priest unto him, nor to come near to any of his holy things, in the most holy place: but they shall bear their shame, and their abominations which they have committed.
But he will make them keepers of the charge of the house, for all the service thereof, and for all that shall be done therein. Visionary restrictions on foreign access and on errant Levites belong to this priestly ideal. They do not authorize modern racial segregation, religious persecution, or permanent stigma after wrongdoing. Lowered service is still service; it is not a forever brand on a family, and it is not a license to lock living people out of civil space.
How this should shape us
Hold unfaithful worship leaders accountable without inventing a racial door policy. Let someone who led people after idols step back from the nearest holy things without being made untouchable. Do not segregate cities or churches from this gate-rule.
