Jerusalem's Center Status Heightens Judgment
Jerusalem set in the midst of the nations
Thus saith the Lord GOD: This is Jerusalem. I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her. She has changed his judgments into wickedness more than the nations, and his statutes more than the countries that are round about her.
Because she has refused his judgments and has not walked in his statutes, the Lord GOD is against her. Fathers shall eat the sons, and sons shall eat their fathers. He will execute judgments, scatter a remnant to all the winds, and make her a reproach among the nations.
Famine, pestilence, and sword interpret the hair
A third part dies with pestilence and is consumed with famine in the midst; a third part falls by the sword round about; a third part he scatters and draws out a sword after them. His anger spent, he will be comforted, and they shall know that he the LORD has spoken it in his zeal.
Cannibalism and mass death must not be sensationalized, imitated, celebrated, or applied as blame to later Jewish suffering. Covenant judgment on this Jerusalem is not a theory that later catastrophes were deserved. Horror is named as horror.
How this should shape us
Let the center city's heightening of judgment stay about that generation's rebellion, not about later Jews. Do not traffic in siege-horror, and do not use this chapter to explain later suffering as earned.
