Seventy Elders Worship Images in a Hidden Chamber
A hole in the wall, then a door
He is brought to the door of the court. When he looks, behold a hole in the wall. Son of man, dig now in the wall. When he has digged, behold a door. Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here.
He goes in and sees every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed upon the wall round about. Seventy men of the ancients of the house of Israel, and in the midst of them Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, stand with every man his censer.
The LORD seeth us not; the LORD hath forsaken the earth
A thick cloud of incense goes up. Then he said, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? For they say, The LORD seeth us not; the LORD hath forsaken the earth. He is told he will see greater abominations.
The hidden-room scene does not authorize conspiracy thinking, antisemitism, or invading private space without lawful cause. Elders in a vision of the temple's corruption are not a template for hunting neighbors in their rooms.
How this should shape us
Take seriously the claim that God does not see. Answer it with truth, not with raids and plots. Do not treat Jewish elders as a conspiracy, and do not dig through walls because a vision did.
