Read It With

  • Genesis 35:1–15

Read verses 5–7 together. Verse 5 explains why the household can travel without pursuit, verse 6 records their arrival, and verse 7 gives the journey's worship purpose. Verse 6 alone does not explain why Bethel matters.

Why It Needs Context

This arrival is meaningful only in relation to God's command in verse 1, the protection in verse 5, the altar in verse 7, and Jacob's earlier encounter in Genesis 28.

Read Genesis 35:5–7 together

Why these verses belong together: Divine protection allows the household to reach Bethel, where Jacob builds and names the altar.

Verse 5. And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.

Verse 6. So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Beth-el, he and all the people that were with him.

Verse 7. And he built there an altar, and called the place El-beth-el: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.
