Arabian Caravans Face a One-Year Crisis
Caravans in the thickets of Arabia are told to bring water
The burden upon Arabia. In the forest in Arabia shall ye lodge, O ye travelling companies of Dedanites. The inhabitants of the land of Tema brought water to him that was thirsty, they prevented with their bread him that fled. For they fled from the swords, from the drawn sword, and from the bent bow, and from the grievousness of war.
Fugitives in desert scrub need water and bread ahead of them. Tema’s hospitality is named. The oracle is a crisis for Arabian caravans, not a stigma on Arab peoples now, and not a colonial brief.
Kedar's remaining archers are timed to a hired worker's year
For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Within a year, according to the years of an hireling, and all the glory of Kedar shall fail: and the residue of the number of archers, the mighty men of the children of Kedar, shall be diminished: for the LORD God of Israel hath spoken it.
A laborer's exact year measures Kedar's reduced glory. The remaining warriors are diminished, not offered as a people to erase later. Dedan, Tema, and Kedar remain ancient names.
How this should shape us
Carry water toward people fleeing a bow. Do not turn a one-year oracle into a modern campaign against Arabian peoples, and do not ignore the thirsty because the prophecy also speaks of diminished archers.
