Isaiah 6:9–13
The Commission Hardens until Only a Stump Remains
The sending is to a people who will hear and not understand
Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
The commission intensifies unresponsiveness already at work; it is a judgment on refusal, not a strategy for hiding the truth. The prophet is not told to mumble. Later Gospel uses of this text are reception of a hard word; they do not authorize celebrating unbelief, withholding clarity, or blaming Jewish people collectively.
How long is answered with emptying, then with a holy-seed stump
Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate, and the LORD have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land. But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.
Felling is real; the stump with seed in it is also real. Hardening is not the last botanical word. Anti-Jewish caricature that stops at fat hearts and never reaches the holy seed has left the unit.
How this should shape us
Speak clearly even when you expect resistance. Do not use this commission to justify murky preaching, to enjoy another community's unbelief, or to write Jewish people out of hope. Keep the stump in the sermon.
Teach it back
Explain Isaiah 6:9–13 in your own words. Name its place in Isaiah, one source-controlled observation, one uncertainty, one enduring truth, and one harmful use the passage does not authorize.

Best judgment: The hardening commission does not authorize withholding clarity, celebrating unbelief, blaming Jewish people collectively, or forcing later Gospel readers back into an anti-Jewish caricature.
