Remembered Mercy Includes Rebellion and the Holy Spirit's Grief

In all their affliction he was afflicted

A recital of the Lord's gracious deeds begins with praise and becomes history. He said, surely they are my people, children who will not deal falsely, and he became their savior. In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in love he redeemed them and carried them all the days of old. They rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit; he became their enemy. Then they remembered Moses, the shepherd of the flock, the one who brought them up from the sea with the shepherd of his flock, dividing waters, giving rest, to make an everlasting name.

Mercy includes rebellion. Shared affliction is one of the Bible's most intimate claims about God. Grief of the Spirit is real; so is remembered exodus. This communal memory does not silence present grief, blame sufferers, demand emotional compliance, or use confession to erase perpetrators.

Carried all the days of old is the contrast to later enmity, and both are in the prayer. A warranted life is to tell the whole story—compassion, presence, revolt, grief—without using any chapter to dodge responsibility or to crush the afflicted.
