James 4:13–17
Plan under God's Will and Life's Brevity
Tomorrow is not a servant you hired
James overhears the planner: today or tomorrow we will go into such a town, spend a year, trade, and make a profit. He does not forbid business, profit, schedules, savings, forecasting, contracts, insurance, or contingency planning. He forbids the arrogance that writes the future as if God were a footnote. You are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. The sane sentence is, 'If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.'
Boasting in a self-made calendar is evil because it pretends you are self-made. Whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin. The right thing may be to keep a promise, refuse a dishonest deal, rest, visit someone, or stop delaying mercy. Hold plans with open hands. Let the Lord's will govern the work, not cancel the work.
How this should shape us
Make the plans your work requires, then hold them under "If the Lord wills." Do the good you already know to do today instead of boasting in a calendar you do not own.
