Jeremiah 15:19–21
Return and Discernment Renew the Prophetic Charge
Return, and distinguish precious speech from vile, to stand as mouth
Therefore thus saith the LORD, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.
The charge does not command reconciliation with abusers, contempt for listeners, or immunity from correction. Jeremiah is called back. Precious-from-vile is discernment of speech, not ranking of persons as trash.
A bronze wall is promised against fight, not against being wrong
And I will make thee unto this people a fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the LORD. And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible.
Resistance without final defeat renews chapter 1's charge. It is not contempt for the people, and it is not a promise that a later speaker is always the bronze wall. Deliverance from the wicked and terrible is protection of the commissioned mouth, not a license to be uncorrectable.
How this should shape us
Return to the work. Separate true words from cheap ones without calling people vile. Do not go back to an abusive crowd to keep their approval, and do not claim bronze-wall status for every argument you win.
