Jeremiah 23:23–32
Near and Far God Rejects Stolen Dreams
A God near and far cannot be dodged by private dreams
Am I a God at hand, and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? Do not I fill heaven and earth? The prophets of dreams are heard: I have dreamed, I have dreamed. How long will this be in the heart of the prophets that steal my words every one from his neighbour?
Nearness is not smallness, and distance is not absence. Stolen speech and dream-claims that make people forget the LORD's name for Baal are the target. The passage does not ban dreams, therapy, imagination, or metaphor.
Wheat, fire, and hammer are contrasts, not a license to smash people
The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? Is not my word like as a fire and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? False dreams cause the people to err; the LORD did not send those prophets.
Fire-and-hammer language describes the word's force against falsehood. It does not authorize violent preaching, humiliation, or breaking persons. Distinguish grain from chaff without turning a pulpit into a weapon.
How this should shape us
Test spiritual claims that soothe forgetting. Dreams need the same honesty as speeches. Do not hide, and do not use hammer-language to harm.
