Jeremiah 9:25–26
Circumcision without Responsive Hearts Is Judged
Circumcised nations are lined up with Judah for a heart-reckoning
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised; Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart.
Judah is placed among neighbors who also bear a bodily sign or who are called uncircumcised. The oracle must not support contempt for Jewish circumcision, forced bodily change, or Christian claims of ethnic replacement. Heart-uncircumcision judges response, not Jewish flesh.
The sign without inward covenant response does not exempt
The shock is that Israel is listed with Egypt and Edom under the same visit. Embodied covenant marks are not nothing, and they are not a substitute for a responsive heart.
Other nations are not mocked as dirty. The comparison levels exemption-claims, it does not invite later readers to erase Israel's mark or to coerce bodies.
How this should shape us
Do not sneer at circumcision, and do not treat a religious mark — yours or anyone's — as a pass. Seek a responsive heart without forcing anyone's body or preaching that the church has replaced Israel.
