Job 14:1–14:6

Job Pleads for Rest in a Brief and Troubled Life

A mortal is named as short-lived and troubled before any particular charge

Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee? Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

Job asks that a laborer's day be allowed to end

Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass; turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

Creaturely limits and impurity language are not proof that this particular person is morally blameworthy. The plea for rest is not a reason to withdraw compassionate care. It is a request that a brief life not be hunted to its last hour.

How this should shape us

Honor how short and hard a life can be without converting that hardness into guilt. Help a laborer finish the day: rest, bounds, and relief, not extra judgment.
