Job Requests Specific Charges
Job asks for a numbered charge
How many are mine iniquities and sins? make me to know my transgression and my sin. Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and holdest me for thine enemy? Wilt thou break a leaf driven to and fro? and wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?
He pictures himself as already decaying while still asking for the file
For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possess the iniquities of my youth. Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths; thou settest a print upon the heels of my feet. And he, as a rotten thing, consumeth, as a garment that is moth eaten.
The request for evidence resists vague blame. It does not claim human perfection, and it does not authorize despairing self-neglect. A leaf and moth-eaten cloth are images of fragility, not instructions to stop eating or washing.
How this should shape us
If you allege fault, specify it. Do not hint that suffering itself is the inventory of sin, and do not treat a person's frailty as a reason to withhold ordinary care.
