Job 17:10–17:16
Job Rejects the Friends' Wisdom and Questions Hope
Job tells them they may try again, and then strips their claim to wisdom
But as for you all, do ye return, and come now: for I cannot find one wise man among you. My days are past, my purposes are broken off, even the thoughts of my heart. They change the night into day: the light is short because of darkness.
Hope is asked whether it can go down with him
If I wait, the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness. I have said to corruption, Thou art my father: to the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister. And where is now my hope? as for my hope, who shall see it? They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust.
The unresolved question should remain unresolved in this speech. It must not be turned into a promise of immediate recovery, and it must not be turned into a denial of later hope. Father-worm language is lament, not a script, not a diagnosis, and not an invitation to seek the grave.
How this should shape us
Let a broken purpose be heard without forcing a bright ending onto this unit. If hope sounds as if it has gone to the pit, stay with the person and seek qualified help; do not preach the worm as kinship.
