Eliphaz Invokes the Ancient Path of the Wicked

An old road is laid over Job's feet

Eliphaz asks whether Job will keep the old way that wicked men have trodden, men cut down out of time, whose foundation was poured out as a flood. They said to God, Depart from us, and asked what the Almighty could do for them.

He can even admit that God had filled their houses with good things, then he tells Job not to share their counsel. The portrait is traditional: the wicked were secure, then they were not. Job is invited to see himself on that path.

The righteous are made to rejoice at ruin

The righteous see the destruction and are glad. The innocent laugh them to scorn. The remnant of the wicked is cut off, and fire consumes their increase. Eliphaz offers Schadenfreude as a mark of piety.

Whatever later judgment language the canon contains, this unit does not authorize delight in a living neighbor's collapse. It also does not turn a disputed ancient type into a map of Job's character. The friends keep needing the wicked to look like Job.
