Eliphaz Promises Wealth and Influence after Return
The altar call sits on a false diagnosis
Acquaint yourself with God and be at peace. Receive the law from his mouth. Lay up his words. Return to the Almighty and be built up. Put iniquity far away. Then Job will have gold as dust, silver of Ophir as stones of the brooks, the Almighty as his treasure, delight, prayer that is heard, vows paid, decrees that stand, and light on his ways.
The sentences can sound like genuine devotion: return, receive instruction, put away wrong. In this mouth they are the close of a speech that has just invented Job's crimes. Reconciliation is offered as the price of admitting what the narrator has denied.
Rescue of others is promised as a perk of return
When men are cast down, Eliphaz says, Job will say, There is lifting up, and God will save the humble person. Even the not-innocent will be delivered through the pureness of Job's hands.
Intercession will actually appear in the epilogue, but not as Eliphaz imagines it. Job will pray for these friends after God rejects their case. This speech must not be turned into a prosperity contract: repent, then wealth, influence, and guaranteed outcomes arrive.
How this should shape us
Return to God without letting anyone sell you a refund. Instruction, prayer, and putting away real wrong remain good. They are not a technique for recovering status, and they do not prove that a person in ashes is an unrepentant oppressor.
