Job 32:15–32:22
Elihu Says He Is Compelled to Speak without Flattery
Their silence ferments in him like new wine
They were amazed. They answered no more. They left off speaking. Elihu says he waited, because they did not speak, because they stood still and answered no more. He will now also show his opinion.
He is full of words. The spirit within constrains him. His belly is as wine that has no vent, ready to burst like new bottles. He will speak and be refreshed. He will open his lips and answer.
He promises no titles and no flattery
He will not accept any person's title, nor give flattering titles to anyone. He does not know how to give flattering titles; in so doing his Maker would soon take him away.
Compulsion and impartiality sound like virtues. They can also license an unsolicited monologue that the wounded person did not ask for. Felt pressure to speak is not the same as a call, and refusing flattery is not the same as refusing cruelty. The test is still the content that now pours out.
How this should shape us
If words are pressing in you beside a sufferer, ask whether they refresh anyone but you. Refuse flattery without using 'honesty' as a reason to dominate the room.
