Elihu Invites Job to Answer without Terror
Elihu turns from the circle and addresses Job by name
Wherefore, Job, I pray you, hear my speeches and hearken to all my words. The words are on his tongue. His lips will utter knowledge clearly. His words are from the uprightness of his heart. His lips will utter knowledge sincerely.
The Spirit of God has made him, he says, and the breath of the Almighty has given him life. He invites Job to answer if he can, to set his words in order, to stand up.
He offers a human conversation without terror
Behold, he is according to Job's wish in God's stead. He also is formed out of the clay. Terror of him should not make Job afraid. His hand should not be heavy on Job.
Job had asked for an arbiter who would remove fear so that a man could speak. Elihu volunteers to be that kind of presence: same clay, no crushing hand. The offer is better than the friends' contempt. It still has to survive the argument that follows. A gentle preface does not make the later demand for confession true.
How this should shape us
If you sit with a crushed person, keep the hand light and the clay in view. Do not claim to stand in God's place unless your presence actually makes speech possible, and do not confuse a calm tone with a correct case.
