Job 33:8–33:13
Elihu Restates Job's Complaint and Challenges It
Elihu quotes Job more tightly than Job spoke
He says he has heard Job's voice: I am clean without transgression, I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me. Behold, God finds occasions against me, he counts me for his enemy, he puts my feet in the stocks, he marks all my paths.
Job has sworn integrity and has felt hunted. He has also asked to be shown specific sins and has not claimed the kind of spotless self the friends needed him to claim. Elihu's restatement is a prosecutor's extract.
The challenge is that God is greater than a man
Why does Job strive against God? God does not give account of any of his matters. Transcendence is the first answer: the greater one does not owe the lesser a ledger.
Job already knew God was greater. That was the problem in the lawsuit, not the solution. Divine greatness can be true and still not make every pastoral question improper. Elihu is not repeating Eliphaz's crime list. He is opening a different path: Job's complaint itself is the issue, because it summons God to explain.
How this should shape us
When you summarize a sufferer, do not sand the speech into a cleaner target. God is greater than a man; that fact does not make questions about injustice a crime, and it does not let you skip what the person actually said.
