Elihu Says God Warns through Dreams
God speaks, Elihu says, in more than one way
God speaks once, yes twice, yet a person does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people, in slumberings on the bed, then God opens the ears and seals their instruction.
The purpose named is not payment for past crime in Eliphaz's sense. It is warning: to withdraw a person from a deed, to hide pride from a man, to keep the soul from the pit and the life from perishing by the sword.
Dream-warning is one ancient account of care, not a diagnostic key
Elihu is offering a pedagogy: God interrupts before ruin. That is not the same as the friends' claim that Job's present ruin proves hidden violence against widows.
The account does not make every dream a message, and it does not authorize certainty about another person's sleep, pride, or secret path. Job has not been shown a sealed night-lesson that explains the messengers of chapter 1. Elihu is theorizing a mode of speech. He is not reading Job's medical chart.
How this should shape us
Take warnings seriously when they are actually given. Do not turn a neighbor's dream, insomnia, or night fear into your revelation about their pride, and do not use this unit to skip ordinary help.
