Elihu Demands Correction and Accuses Job of Rebellion
The speech he wants Job to say is a confession script
Surely it is meet to be said to God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more. That which I see not, teach me. If I have done iniquity, I will do no more. Should God repay according to Job's mind, so that Job refuses and chooses, and not God? Job must speak what he knows.
The script is a disciple's prayer in another context. In this context it is a demand that Job accept the friends' missing piece: there is iniquity to leave, and the pain is the tutor.
The last line accuses Job of rebellion on top of sin
Men of understanding and a wise man listening to Elihu will say that Job has spoken without knowledge and his words were without wisdom. Job's answer should be, in Elihu's view, further trial, because he answers like wicked men. He adds rebellion to his sin. He claps his hands among them and multiplies his words against God.
This is not the narrator's verdict. It is Elihu at his hardest, and here he sounds most like the three even while he still thinks he is correcting them. Demanding confession from a man the prologue called upright, then calling his remaining speech rebellion, repeats the error in a younger key.
How this should shape us
Do not hand a sufferer a confession to sign so that your theology can rest. Correction, if it is real, still needs truth. Rebellion is a grave word; do not spend it on a cry.
