Job 6:8–6:13
Job Longs for Death and Names Exhausted Strength
Job asks God to grant the thing he longs for: an end of life
Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for! Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off. Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
He then names exhausted strength, not a program
What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong my life? Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass? Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?
The death wish is anguish, not instruction, not an ideal, and not a lyric. Remaining comfort in not concealing God's words does not make the wish safe to copy. A hearer in this place needs a person who will stay and qualified immediate help, not a debate about whether the request is theologically tidy.
How this should shape us
If someone asks that life be cut off, do not romanticize the request and do not scold it. Stay, take the exhaustion seriously, and seek qualified local crisis or emergency support. Strength of stone is not required of a suffering friend.
