Job Charges that One Fate Sweeps Away Innocent and Wicked
Job refuses the friends' two-fate world
This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked. If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent. The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he?
Calamity, in this charge, does not sort people. Judges' faces are covered. The accusation is Job's, severe and unanswered in this unit. It must neither be muted to protect a doctrine nor turned, without argument, into the narrator's last word about God.
How this should shape us
Let the observation stand that sudden ruin does not identify the guilty. Do not correct Job by restoring a simple split between perfect and wicked when the page has just denied that split.
