John 14:15-24
Love, Commandments, and the Other Paraclete
Love keeps Jesus' commands, and another Advocate comes to dwell.
If they love him, they will keep his commandments. He asks the Father, who will give another Paraclete to be with them forever: the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive. He will not leave them as orphans; they will see him. The one who has his commands and keeps them is the one who loves him, and the Father and Son will make their dwelling with that person. The one who does not love him does not keep his words.
Paraklētos can mean advocate, helper, counselor, or one called alongside; no single English gloss should police every occurrence. Obedient love is covenant relation with Jesus, not a tool for leaders to equate obedience to themselves with love for him. The Spirit of truth does not make a person, pulpit, or institution infallible. Father, Son, and Spirit dwelling with the disciples contribute to later Trinitarian reflection without supplying every later definition from this paragraph.
How this should shape us
Let love take the form of Jesus' actual teaching, not a leader's preference list. Receive the Spirit as presence rather than orphanhood, keep your conscience, and test any 'if you loved God you would obey me' demand by whether the command looks like Jesus and protects the people it names.
