King James VersionJohn 14:25-31

These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.

Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

John 14:25-31

The Spirit Teaches and Jesus Gives His Peace

The Spirit will remind them, and the peace Jesus gives is not the world's hush.

He has spoken these things while still with them. The Paraclete, the Holy Spirit sent by the Father in his name, will teach them and bring his words to remembrance. He leaves them his peace, not as the world gives. Hearts need not be troubled or afraid, even as he goes to the Father, who is greater, and as the ruler of this world approaches and finds nothing in him. He does as the Father commanded so that the world may know he loves the Father.

Johannine peace is not the absence of conflict, grief, or protest. It does not require silence about abuse or injustice. 'The Father is greater than I' belongs to this mission and departure; the clause alone does not settle later debates about Jesus' nature, and it should not be weaponized against the Gospel's other claims. The Spirit's reminding does not erase human memory, writing, or the need to test later speech by what Jesus actually said.

How this should shape us

Receive a peace that makes truthful courage possible. Learn by remembering Jesus' words rather than by claiming fresh immunity from evidence. Go toward a hard obedience without telling a wounded person that peace means staying quiet. Hold 'the Father is greater' together with the rest of this Gospel instead of isolating it as a slogan.
