John 18:12-18, King James Version

John 18:12-18

Jesus Is Bound while Peter Enters and Denies

Jesus is bound for Annas while Peter follows as far as a courtyard fire.

The soldiers, their commander, and the Jewish officers arrest Jesus, bind him, and take him first to Annas, father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. The narrator recalls Caiaphas's counsel that one man should die for the people. Another disciple, known to the high priest, goes in with Jesus and then brings Peter in. A servant girl at the door asks whether Peter is one of this man's disciples. He says he is not. Servants and officers have made a charcoal fire because it is cold, and Peter stands with them, warming himself.

Annas and Caiaphas belong to a specific priestly ruling network under Rome. They do not represent Jewish people as a whole. The other disciple is not explicitly the Beloved Disciple, and his access is unexplained; the text does not identify him. Peter's denial begins in real danger. Fear explains the lie without making it harmless, and it does not transfer his failure onto the household servants who are doing their work.

How this should shape us

Notice how access and fear shape testimony, including your own. Examine denials without turning a high-priestly household into a symbol for all Jews. If you hold a door, a job, or a fire in a violent system, tell the truth you can without pretending the danger was imaginary.
