John 9:13-17
Investigators Divide over Sabbath and the Sign
Pharisees divide over Sabbath clay and an unprecedented sign
They bring the man to the Pharisees. It is the sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. The Pharisees also ask how he received sight. He tells them he put clay on his eyes, he washed, and he sees. Therefore some of the Pharisees say this man is not of God because he does not keep the sabbath. Others say, 'How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles?' There is a division among them.
They ask the blind man again what he says of him, that he hath opened his eyes. He says, 'He is a prophet.' Pharisees here are not a monolith. The Sabbath question is a serious Jewish interpretive dispute. The narrator does not grant a caricature in which law is simply against compassion, or in which Pharisees, Judaism, or Sabbath oppose healing. Calling Jesus a prophet is a developing judgment, not the man's last word.
The person most affected is still in the room
Institutional investigation can seek truth. It must not become intimidation of a disabled witness. His first public confession is allowed to be partial.
How this should shape us
Make room for dissenting evidence inside an institution, and do not let rule-talk silence the person whose body is under discussion. Refuse any reading that sets Judaism or Sabbath against healing.
