Neighbors Question the Healed Man's Identity
Neighbors argue whether the seeing man is the same beggar
The neighbours and they which before had seen him that he was blind say, 'Is not this he that sat and begged?' Some say it is he. Others say he is like him. He says, 'I am he.' They ask how his eyes were opened. He answers that a man called Jesus made clay, anointed his eyes, told him to wash in Siloam, and he went, washed, and received sight.
They ask where Jesus is. He says, 'I know not.' Confusion about his identity can expose how little a beggar had been seen as a person, not only astonishment at healing. He remains the same man. His testimony is accurate and limited. Not knowing Jesus' whereabouts is part of honest witness, not a defect in the person who can now see.
Poverty is not a moral caption
Sitting and begging named his public place. The scene does not make poverty evidence of failure, and it does not make him a different or lesser self after the sign.
How this should shape us
Believe people about their own identity and experience. Let testimony include what the speaker does not know, and do not treat a former beggar as a curiosity or as someone whose personhood changed with his eyes.
