Mark 13:32-37, King James Version

Mark 13:32-37

No One Knows the Hour, So Every Disciple Must Watch

The hour is the Father's; the assignment is to stay awake

But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

Ignorance of the hour is not a puzzle to solve. It is the reason for wakeful work. Servants have authority, a task, and a door to keep through all four night watches. The passage does not permit calculating the date or hour. Anyone who claims to have finished the timetable is already failing the command.

How this should shape us

Live today as a servant whose master may return in any watch of the night: keep the task, keep honest, and drop the fantasy that you have figured out the clock.

Where careful interpreters disagreeThe strongest options and their difficulties

Where do careful interpreters differ?

Best judgment: The explicit ignorance statement rules out date-setting. 'Nor the Son' is textually secure in Mark and materially informs Christological discussion. Watchfulness becomes faithful readiness through the Passion's four watches, not sleepless panic.
