The Fig Tree Teaches Nearness while Jesus' Words Endure
The fig tree teaches recognition; his words outlast the sky
Now learn a parable of the fig tree. When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near: so ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done. Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
The lesson is nearness you can recognize the way you recognize summer from a changing branch — especially the temple crisis he has been describing. 'This generation' belongs to that horizon. It does not provide a modern forty-year countdown you can restart from a founding date, a war, or a newspaper. What you can trust without a calendar is this: his words remain when heaven and earth do not.

Best judgment: 'This generation' can refer to Jesus' contemporaries, an unbelieving kind, or the generation that sees the signs; the first option strongly preserves the temple-war horizon, while the discourse also reaches beyond it. The saying resists easy flattening.
