Mark 15:16-20
Roman Soldiers Mock and Abuse the King of the Jews
The cohort plays king with purple and thorns
The soldiers lead him away into the hall, called Praetorium, and they call together the whole band. They clothe him with purple, plait a crown of thorns and put it about his head, and begin to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews. They smite him on the head with a reed, spit upon him, and bowing their knees worship him. When they have mocked him, they take off the purple from him, put his own clothes on him, and lead him out to crucify him.
This is Roman military mockery of a condemned 'King of the Jews.' The purple, the thorns, the salute, the blows, and the fake worship belong to the empire's men. The mockery does not authorize hazing, torture, antisemitic spectacle, or violent reenactment. Do not play this scene. Do not turn his title into a joke at Jewish expense. Look at the soldiers and see what power does for sport.
How this should shape us
Refuse entertainment that lives on someone else's humiliation. This hall is not a script for a party, a hazing, or a passion play that makes a people the punchline.
