Matthew 25:31–25:46
The Son of man judges nations by treatment of the least
The King hides in the hungry, the stranger, and the prisoner
When the Son of man comes in glory with all the angels, he sits on his throne and separates the nations as a shepherd separates sheep from goats. To those on his right: inherit the kingdom; I was hungry, thirsty, a stranger, naked, sick, in prison, and you served me. They ask when. He answers: as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you did it to me. To those on the left the same list is neglect, and the sentence is eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels, then eternal punishment; the righteous go into eternal life.
Interpreters debate whether the least are disciples, missionaries, the poor broadly, or overlapping groups. Every serious reading keeps embodied treatment at the center and final judgment out of human hands. The surprise on both sides is the point: they did not know they were meeting him.
How this should shape us
Look for Jesus in the person who needs food, water, welcome, clothing, a visit, or a presence in jail. Do the merciful thing without waiting to be sure it will count. Leave the sorting of nations to the Son of man.
